Assignment 4 Drama
The Zoo Story

Structural Elements
1. Character and Characterization
Peter : a man in his early forties, neither fat nor gaunt, neither handsome nor homely. He wears tweeds, smokes a pipe, and carries horn-rimmed glasses. Although he is moving into middle age, his dress and his manner would suggest a man younger.

Jerry : a man in his late thirties, not poorly dressed, but carelessly. What was once a trim and lightly muscled body has begun to go to fat; and while he is no longer handsome, it is evident that he once was. His fall from physical grace should not suggest debauchery; he has, to come closest to it, a great weariness.

2. Plot
a. Exposition : the exposition in the play starts when Peter is seated on the bench stage right in Central Park and then Jerry enters to ask for the location of the Zoo.
b. Conflict : The conflict of the play starts with an external conflict, when Jerry asks so many questions and Peter becomes annoyed, Jerry gives comment when Peter wants to smoke.
c. Complication : The conflict develops when they start a conversation and then Jerry asks Peter to stay while a long then Peter. Jerry asks Peter to move from the bench, but he does not.
d. Climax : The climax starts when Jerry tosses the knife to Peter and fights him, and then Jerry impales the knife to Peter.
e. Resolution : The play ends when Peter groans and feels trouble, then he repeats oh my God many times, after that he dies.
3. Setting
a. Setting of time : in the afternoon in summer; in the present
b. Setting of place : in the Central Park

4. Theme : loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, and social disparity.

5. Imagery : guinea pig = sacrifice

6. Style : in grammatical structure, the author uses standard grammatical structure and non-grammatical structure on the dialogue. The zoo story uses long and short sentences.

Conclusion, the drama entitled The Zoo Story relates to man and society. It tells the audiences about the conflict between Peter and Jerry, when Jerry asks so many questions and Peter become annoyed, Jerry gives comment when Peter wants to smoke. The conflict develops when they start a conversation and then Jerry asks Peter to stay while a long then Peter. Jerry asks Peter to move from the bench, but he does not. The play resides, in fact, not in the physical actions of the plot (except the killing at the end) but in the acuteness (not to mention the shocking quality) of the language, in the range of kinds of aggression shown by Jerry — from insult and assault to the subtlest of insinuations — and even in the symbolism which becomes more apparent near the end of the action.
